SBE To Meet in Jackson on October 18

The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) will meet in person at 9 a.m. on October 18 in Jackson. The SBE will convene to consider action on their goals and priorities for public education and board priorities for 2024-25. The board will also consider action on revisions to board policies and will open Chapter 22 School Schedules for rule promulgation.

The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) will meet virtually at 9 a.m. on September 19. The SBE will convene to receive and take action on recommendations for applications for teacher and leader evaluation systems. Board members will also consider approval of the revised Science WyTOPP blueprints.

SBE & WDE Proceed With Collaborative Assessment Reduction

The Wyoming State Board of Education met virtually on August 6 and took action to remove the grade 3 Writing assessment from next spring’s administration of the WY-TOPP state assessment. Action was also taken to reduce the number of items on grades 3-8 Math WY-TOPP to provide more focused instruction and in-depth assessment of critical math concepts. The elimination of grade 3 essay writing from the current state assessment originated from Superintendent Megan Degenfelder’s Assessment Reduction & Efficiency Plan.

The Wyoming State Board of Career and Technical Education will meet virtually to take action on revisions to the Perkins V Plan performance indicators. SBE To Meet Virtually On May 16

The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) will meet virtually at 9 a.m. on May 16 to receive and take action on recommendations on applications for alternative calendars for the upcoming 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. Schools submit applications for alternative calendars to operate on fewer than 175 student days. Schools applying for an alternative calendar must demonstrate how they plan to meet the minimum number of teacher/pupil contact hours.

SBE Continues Partnership With Wyoming’s Future Of Learning Collaborative Around State Assessment And Accountability

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) took action at its February 15 meeting to continue their collaborative work with Wyoming’s Future of Learning Partnership. The partnership, comprised of Governor Mark Gordon; State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder; the Wyoming State Board of Education; the University of Wyoming College of Education; the Wyoming Community College Commission; and the Wyoming Association of School Administrators, aims to create a more student centered education system that is based on individual learning needs and interests and to partner with Wyoming industries to better prepare students for careers.

SBCTE Spotlights Work in Career and Technical Education

CHEYENNE – The State Board of Career & Technical Education (SBCTE) welcomed Governor Mark Gordon to its February 15 meeting where he commended the board for its bold leadership. He thanked the board for their service and characterized the state board as the right group of people, at the right time, and having the right conversations. The Governor noted Wyoming’s long history of providing quality education while now embracing core principles for bettering education. He specifically noted the work with the Profile of a Graduate, the Reimaging and Innovating the Delivery of Education pilots, ongoing work to reduce state standards, and involvement with the Wyoming’s Future of Learning Partnership.

SBE Adopts Rules on School Schedules, Moves Accountability Rules Forward

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) voted to adopt the proposed Chapter 22 Rules governing School Schedules at its regularly scheduled meeting on November 19, 2021. The board’s approval came after a 45-day public comment period on the rules and will now go to Governor Mark Gordon for review. If signed by the governor, K-12 schools will operate under a new definition of pupil-teacher contact time.

SBE Approves Public Input on Proposed Mathematics Performance Standards

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) voted to approve the collection of public input on the proposed Mathematics Performance Standards and adopted the WIDA English Language Development Framework for English Language Learners (ELL) at its February 25, 2021 board meeting. The state will continue to use the ACCESS for testing the progress of ELL students toward proficiency on ELL standards.

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) will meet via the Zoom online platform at 9 a.m. on November 19, 2020.

The Wyoming Department of Education will provide a Standards update, including Science, Math, PE & Health, Fine & Performing Arts, and information on recommended revisions to the Chapter 6 rules regarding school accreditation status. The board will also discuss a proposed contingency reduction plan to the school foundation program funds in the SBE budget.

SBE Approves Options for Accountability and Schedule Flexibility

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) approved options for flexibility regarding state accountability requirements and alternative schedules for the 2020-21 school year in response to COVID-19 at its meeting on October 26. While meeting virtually, the SBE also approved teacher and leader evaluation systems submitted by several districts. In further action, the board emphasized the importance placed on hearing from stakeholders by approving a state board public input email to be posted on the Wyoming State Board of Education website.

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) held its annual retreat on July 16-17, 2020 in Casper and, during the retreat, the board took action to approve a 10% General Fund Budget Reduction in addition to the 10% reduction approved on June 19, 2020. The board approved three district submissions of Leader Evaluation Systems and 19 district submissions of Teacher Evaluation Systems.

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) will host a virtual meeting starting at 8 a.m. on April 23, 2020 via the online Zoom platform. State Board of Education Adopts Computer Science Standards with Revisions

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) voted to adopt Computer Science Standards into Chapter 10 rules during its meeting on Friday. Two key revisions were made to the standards before adoption. One revision added language to the definition of enhanced benchmarks to clarify that they are to be made available and optional to all students. An additional revision removed Performance Level Descriptors from the standards document, and made those available as a separate guidance document, similar to several other content areas.

Wyoming State Board of Education Vote to Promulgate Revised Teacher and Leader Evaluation Rules

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) voted to withdraw the currently proposed Chapter 29 Rules for teacher and leader evaluations and promulgate revised rules at its meeting in Laramie on September 20. The Board voted to revise the leadership evaluation section of the rules to add language that clarifies schools districts’ locally designed leader evaluation system must align to a majority of the benchmarks within professional Standard One of the state-defined system. The standard encompasses clear and consistent focus on maximizing the learning and growth of all students.

State Board of Education Approves Revised Computer Science Standards

The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE), at the request of the SBE, reconvened its Computer Science Standards Review Committee to revise standards at the elementary grades. While the Computer Science Committee maintained all of the content standards, the committee designated priority standards, enhanced standards, and supporting standards. This reduces the number of “required” standards from nine at the K-2 level to four. The SBE acknowledged the work of the WDE and its committee and voted unanimously to promulgate Chapter 10 rules. The public comment will open after the governor grants permission to proceed.

State Board Approves School Accountability Cut Scores

The cut scores determine if schools will receive a rating of Exceeding, Meeting, Partially Meeting or Not Meeting Expectations under the Wyoming Accountability in Education Act. The SBE accepted the recommendations of a Professional Judgment Panel (PJP) comprised of educators, school administrators, and parents from across the state. The PJP reviewed performance data from school districts in early October to consider where the bar should be set for the performance of Wyoming schools in light of changes made to the measures used to determine the ratings.

State Board to Reconsider Leader Evaluation System Rules in June

The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) voted during their meeting on Friday not to promulgate the Chapter 29 rules on evaluation systems for district and school leaders. Instead, the SBE will vote on adopting emergency rules during its next meeting in June.

The need to update the rules was prompted by a change in state law during the 2017 legislative session, which requires each school district to adopt a leadership evaluation system for superintendents, principals, and others serving in a similar capacity starting with the 2018-19 school year.

Wyoming State Board of Education Recommends New Science Standards for Governor’s Approval

The Wyoming State Board of Education voted unanimously today to approve the 2016 Wyoming Science Content and Performance Standards, the first new science standards in 13 years. The standards will now be sent to Governor Mead for signature. If signed, school districts will develop local curricula to implement the standards by the 2020-21 school year.

The Wyoming State Board of Education met in Casper Thursday, August 18 to begin developing its legislative priorities for 2017 and to approve several policies. As part of this work, the board voted in favor of allowing all ex-officio members an equal vote.
