Thomas SachseMay 20, 2016

CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education’s chairman Pete Gosar announced today that Dr. Thomas Sachse has been hired as the new board coordinator. The board voted to hire Sachse during its meeting in Laramie on Friday, May 20. Forty-nine people applied for the position. After a rigorous selection process, three candidates were interviewed by a committee of four board members.

“The coordinator position is essential to the State Board of Education’s work and its ability to maintain an independent voice on behalf of Wyoming citizens,” said Gosar. “We hired Tom because he understands our charge very well and brings an uncommon depth of knowledge and experience in Wyoming education. He has spent the last 21 years here, implementing and managing K-12 standards and assessments, developing curriculum, and helping districts manage through accountability and accreditation. Tom’s perspective, knowledge and relationships will add significant value, and we are thrilled to have him on board.”

Sachse has 38 years of experience in education, most recently as assistant superintendent and director of curriculum and assessment for Sheridan County School District #2. In April, he was named Wyoming Curriculum Director of the Year. Sachse is retiring from his position at Sheridan County School District #2 this June and will begin as board coordinator July 1.

“There is nothing more important to the future of Wyoming than how we handle education today,” said Sachse. “I hope to help the board make decisions that work in our classrooms and build student achievement across the state.”

Prior to joining Sheridan County School District #2 in 2000, Sachse served as curriculum consultant from 1995-2000 at the Center for School Improvement, Region V BOCES in Jackson, WY. He moved to Wyoming from California, where he spent 17 years as executive director for the California Science Project at the University of California, principal investigator for the California Science Scope, Sequence and Coordination Project, and manager for the Science and Environmental Education Unit of the California Department of Education. Sachse earned his B.S. in Psychology and M.S. in Educational Psychology from University of Illinois, and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Assessment from Stanford University.
