Wyoming State Board of Education

Accreditation

Accreditation

Wyoming’s K-12 school districts are accredited annually by the Wyoming State Board of Education, in accordance W.S. 21-2-304(a)(ii). The accreditation process ensures schools and districts adhere to state statutes and rules governing public education in Wyoming. The accreditation process is based on 24 established criteria.

Accreditation rules also support continuous improvement through a collaborative on-site Peer Review every five years. Members of the Peer Review team and WDE leaders use reflection rubrics to identify district strengths and recommended growth areas. Peer review offers formative feedback but does not determine accreditation status.

Wyoming State Authorized Charter Schools are not eligible to participate in receiving state accreditation.

Peer Review

A red apple rests on a stack of books, with colorful pencils and alphabet blocks nearby.

Every five years, districts and schools are required to participate in an on-site Peer Review for accreditation; however, the Peer Review ratings are formative feedback and are not used to determine accreditation status. The Peer Review is conducted by the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) or an approved provider. The peer review is based on research-based practices selected by the WDE with input from an accrediation taskforce. The Peer Review team will collect articfacts, examine processes, and conduct classroom observations. For each of the Peer Review criteria listed above, the district receives a rating of:

Deficient – No relevant artifacts or evidence of a process were observed.

Adequate – Some to numerous artifacts were observed, but there was not a clearly-defined, systematic process, or ther was limited implementation of the process.

Strong – A coherent, systema tice process that is being implemented across the district was discussed with the team,, and concise articfacts were observed.

Exemplary – A coherent, systematic, documented process that is well-implemented across the district was shared with the team, and concised articatcts were observed. The process and articipates were of a level of quality that can be shared statewide.

District Assessment System (DAS)

W.S. 21-3-110 (a)(xv) and 21-3-110 (a)(xxiv) mandates that school districts have an assessment system in place to measure and monitor student performance on the Content and Performance Standards in all content areas. The WDE reviews plans annually through evidence submission, assurances, and on-site every 5-years for alignment, consistency, and meeting DAS requirements. Districts are provided guidance through the DAS Guidebook.
