The board invites all Wyoming citizens to join the conversation. In addition to commenting at any public board meeting and reaching out to board members on an individual basis, citizens may learn more and share their point of view in a number of other meaningful ways on a wide variety of education issues.

Accountability

Providing information about the quality of education received by Wyoming students.

 

Assessment

Indicating how well students are learning certain subjects.

 

Standards

Defining what Wyoming students should know and be able to do.

 

Accreditation

Ensuring that schools and districts are systematically using effective practices and meeting requirements of state education policy.

 

Other Duties

Statewide Communication & Collaboration: The Wyoming State Board of Education is mandated in W.S. 21-2-304(b)(v) to initiate and facilitate discussions regarding the needs of and the means for improving education. The board welcomes opportunities to gain insights and feedback from stakeholders and works to establish networks across educational associations, businesses, and communities.

Career & Technical Education: The Wyoming State Board of Education also serves as the Wyoming State Board of Career and Technical Education (SBCTE). Under W.S. 21-2-307, the SBCTE reviews CTE programs to ensure the programs serve the needs of students and are aligned to content and performance standards.

Charter Schools: The State Board of Education reviews requests for waivers from public charter schools in Wyoming.

Alternative Schedules: The State Board of Education sets rules ensuring alternative schedules meet the minimum number of instructional hours. There are a variety of reasons why schools request an alternative schedule. It is the board’s responsibility to review and approve alternative schedule requests.

Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES): The State Board of Education approves any agreement to form a board of cooperative educational services among districts.

Teacher and Leader Evaluation Systems:  The State Board of Education sets rules and approves district submissions of teacher and leader evaluation systems.

Certificates of Completion:  The State Board of Education sets rules for students on state extended standards to receive a Certificate of Completion based on a student’s Individualized Education Program.

High School Graduation:  The State Board of Education sets graduation standards and works with local school districts to establish requirements for a student to receive a high school diploma.

Statewide System of Support: The State Board of Education is to establish a progressive system of support and intervention to assist schools. This work is operationalized by the Wyoming Department of Education.
