About the Wyoming State Board of Education
The Wyoming State Board of Education was established in 1917 to set key educational policies for Wyoming’s K-12 districts. It is an independent body, appointed by the Governor to represent stakeholders throughout the state, including Wyoming’s more than 90,000 students.
The board is seated by 11 volunteer regional representatives, appointed by the governor and confirmed by the senate for staggered six-year terms. There are currently two three additional ex-officio members, Ex-officio members are the state board in the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and executive director of the Wyoming Community College Commission, and the president of the University of Wyoming, or their designees. The board is responsible for setting key education policies related to state standards, school accreditation, accountability, and assessments to help ensure that all students have equal access to a quality education. Learn more about the role and responsibilities of the state board here.
The board works closely with the Wyoming Department of Education, which implements many of the policies the State Board of Education is responsible for setting.
