CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) held a virtual meeting on November 16 to discuss reports that were sent to the Joint Education Interim Committee regarding the state accountability system. The SBE reviewed two bills that address refinements on school accountability and teacher accountability. Dr. Tom Sachse, SBE coordinator, gave reports including a draft preschool resolution, Chairman Walt Wilcox said the board is focusing on preschool as an equity issue, “preschool helps to provide a foundation for learning both socially and academically that will help children succeed in elementary school. There is a strong body of research that confirms all kids benefit from preschool experiences. Even more impressive is that poor and disadvantaged kids often make the most gains. The SBE is joined by many other professional organizations that support early childhood services to young children.”
Dr. Sachse also reported on the curriculum director’s input on legislative curriculum mandates for the basket of goods related to content areas, two SBE policies of governance for information, and a brief report on conference attendance at the National Association of State Boards of Education.
The board also received two reports from the Wyoming Department of Education on the federal accountability state plan and the results of this year’s accountability system. The SBE took no action at this meeting and will hold its next meeting on January 17 via teleconference.
