CHEYENNE – The Wyoming State Board of Education (SBE) approved the new teacher evaluation system proposed by Carbon #1 during its virtual meeting on Thursday.

“The state board has consistently supported legislation that places control of the teacher evaluation processes in the hands of each local district,” said SBE Board Chairman Walt Wilcox. “Teacher evaluation has been a process that involves local school boards, the Wyoming Department of Education, and ultimately the Wyoming State Board of Education.”

The board also received several reports from SBE Coordinator Dr. Thomas Sachse. He reviewed a revised version of the Basket of Goods Task Force report, summarized work of the board’s Stakeholder Engagement Standing Committee on civics education, discussed the board’s priorities for reporting to the Joint Education Interim Committee (JEIC) in November, and proposed several research possibilities on the state accountability system for the SBE’s consideration.

In addition to action on the Carbon #1 proposal, the board also approved administrative procedures and approved the Basket of Goods Task Force report for submission to the Wyoming Legislature’s JEIC meeting on November 14-15 in Cheyenne.

The board voted to postpone adopting Chapter 29 emergency rules, on district and school leader and teacher evaluation systems, to avoid a gap between the finalization of regular rules and the expiration of the current emergency rules. Revised Chapter 29 regular rules are currently out for public comment.

The next board meeting is scheduled for November 22. For more information about the SBE and its mission, visit https://wyboardofeducation.org, and follow the SBE on Twitter @WYStateBoardEd.
